Summary edit
DescriptionScale model of Solar System 10 billion to 1.svg |
English: This 10 billion to 1 scale model of the Solar system can be placed into hallways of most school buildings. The inner solar system can be placed inside, while some or all of the the outer planets are typically placed outside, with Neptune at a distance of 450 meters from the Sun. Students can copy the drawings by hand on index cards or cut them out and glue or tape to the cards. Also, an interesting student exercise is understanding why the size of Venus shown in its transit across the Sun is larger than the planet (hint: it's not a shadow, but an actual image of Venus, seen from the Earth as if it were projected onto the Sun.) SVG files can be difficult to print, but the Moon can be seen on the 1000px and 2000px png renditions from Commons. Gimp can also open the svg file and render the Moon as a solid circle at 1000 pixels per inch, with a png file of about 4 Megabytes. |
