(a) Coccolithus braarudii, (b) Scyphosphaera apsteinii, (c) Calcidiscus leptoporus, (d) Chrysotila carterae, and (e) Emiliania huxleyi. All species included are placolith bearing with the exception of S. apsteinii (b) which bears disk-shaped muroliths and barrel-shaped lopadoliths, representative examples of each coccolith type are labeled (arrowhead). Scale bars represent 10 μm (a–d) and 1 μm (e).
