Description
English: Wooden platform or scaffold with three so-called "carcan" posts equipped with six necklaces and benches. Because of its completeness, this pillory is almost unique to our country. The punishment of the pillory with the necklace was reintroduced in France by the Code Pénal of 1791. The duration of this disgraceful punishment ranged from 2 hours in the case of a conviction to imprisonment to 4 hours in the case of solitary confinement and 6 hours to punishment in irons (men) or confinement in a penitentiary (women). The convict was shown off on a scaffold in the marketplace. Above his head, a sign hung on the pole with his name and address and the reason for conviction and punishment.
Nederlands: Houten schandpaal.
