Description
English: The J. J. Newberry Building, earlier known as the Schermerhorn Block, at 43-47 Main Street in the Tompkins Street/Main Street Historic District of downtown Cortland, New York, as seen in 2020. The building was erected in 1880 and housed various offices (including the law practice of namesake attorney James A. Schermerhorn, who also served as president of the Bank of Cortland) until 1927, when the entire building was purchased and made the flagship location of the J.J. Newberry & Co. discount store. The architectural style is an eclectic smorgasbord incorporating various Late Victorian styles.
