Notes

The victory at Dettingen on the river Main on 27 June 1743 was the last occasion on which a ruling King of England led his troops into battle. George II. was in charge of the combined forces of Britain, Hanover, and Austria-Hungary, 42,000 men in all, against the larger French army under the Duc de Noailles. The progress of the battle is recounted in some detail, down to the names of illustrious casualties and prisoners, and reads like a contemporary newspaper report, which may well have been its origin. The occasion was subsequently celebrated in London with Handel's Dettingen Te Deum.

Large broadsides like this were printed on two sheets of paper, then stuck together; the join is visible just below the engraving. (David Paisey)

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.
