The Schwabacher Brothers came to Washington Territory in 1860, first opening a store in Walla Walla, and then in 1869, their first Seattle store." The Schwabacher building at Commercial Street (1st Avenue South) just south of Mill Street (Yesler Way), completed in October 1872, was the first brick structure in Seattle. This building was destroyed in the Great Seattle Fire of 1889, and a new brick building was soon built. That building, also destroyed by fire, was replaced in 1892 with a building which still stands today in historic Pioneer Square as a Seattle landmark. This letterhead features a detailed drawing of the post-fire Schwabacher Brothers building surrounded by horse-drawn carts loaded with goods. The invoice records a purchase of several sizes of nails made by a Mr. D. W. Barker in January 1901.
