THE RELOCATION OF THE UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD. sections of the line between Cheyenne and Ogden onwhich the old line has been abandoned and an entirelynew line built. In a distance of 512 miles, measuredon the old line, 158 miles of new road have beenconstructed with a saving of 30.47 miles in dis-tance. In addition to this reduction there hasbeen established a standard maximum grade of43.3 feet to the mile over a stretch of the road whereformerly grades as high as 68 to 97.7 feet per mileexisted. Moreover, the maximum curvature has beenreduced from 6 deg. to 5 deg., 4 deg., 3 deg., andon one or two locations as low as 1 deg. The re-sult of this work will be a saving in the amount of line is 0.37 of a mile greater; but the object aimedat was the reduction of the grade, which has beenbrought down from 97.7 feet per mile
