Description
English: Scots Pine on the western slopes of Lucas Castle, New Forest. This specimen shows the shape that the Scots Pine tree can take when it does not have to compete for light with neighbouring trees. This one is on the western slopes of Lucas Castle, a small bluff overlooking the tree-lined course of Highland Water to the west. The "browse line" is clearly visible on this tree, a result of any branches within the reach of deer and ponies being eaten. There are many self-seeded Scots Pine on the open heathland.
