Description

"Sculpture in Eaton Bray Church, Bedfordshire", drawn in 1815 by Thomas Fisher, and etched in 1836, by Thomas Fisher. Part of a 16th century monument to Edmund Bray, 1st Baron Bray (1484-1539), lord of the manor of Eaton, who married Jane Hallighwell (c.1486-1558), the daughter and heiress of Sir Richard Hallighwell, (Halliwell, Halwell, or Holywell) of Harberton and South Pool, Devon (c.1462-July 24, 1506) by his wife Anne Norbury (d. between 1500 and 1504), an heraldic heiress.     • 1&4: Gules, a fess chequy (compony-counter-compony) argent and sable between six crosslets formée fitchée argent (Boteler, a Bray heiress (Boteler of Wem, Shropshire (Baron Boteler, 1308)))
    • 2&3: Or, two bends gules (Sudeley, a Boteler heiress). William le Boteler, 2nd Baron Boteler (1298-1361), of Wem, married Margaret FitzAlan, daughter of Robert FitzAlan, Earl of Arundel. He had two sons both named William:
      • William le Boteler I, 3rd Baron Boteler (1295 - 1369) of Wemme, eldest son and heir, married a certain Elizabeth;
      • William le Boteler II (d. post 1380), second son, also named William (according to GEC Complete Peerage, Vol.12, Part 1, p.418, note (c)), who married Joan de Sudeley, elder sister and heires of her brother John de Sudeley, 3rd Baron Sudeley (1339-1367). His son was Thomas Boteler, 4th Baron Sudeley (1355-1398), whose descendants quartered the arms of Sudeley.
  • 5: Bendy of ten or and azure (Montfort) (Montfort, lord of the manor of "Beldesert" (w:Beaudesert, Warwickshire), a Sudeley heiress. Joan de Sudeley's paternal grandmother was Margaret de Montford, heiress (in her issue) of Beaudesert Castle, Warwickshire, being one of the two sisters and eventual co-heiresses of Peter de Montford, 3rd Baron Montford (d.1370)
  • 6: Azure, a chevron or (D'Abernon)

Also sculpted: A Hemp-brake, possibly the canting heraldic badge of the Bray family. The marriage was in 1497, thus the royal arms at right are those of King Henry VII (1485-1509), but possibly of his son King Henry VIII (1509-1547). The plant at right is possibly a pomegranate, possibly a reference to Catherine of Aragon, betrothed firstly to Prince Arthur, then to his younger brother Henry VIII.

Marriage

Text from BURKE'S Extinct and Dormant Peerage, quoted in[2]:

Jane Halliighwell (c.1486-October 24,1558) was the daughter of Sir Richard Hallighwell, (Halliwell, Halwell, or Holywell) of Harberton and South Pool, Devon (c.1462-July 24, 1506) and Anne Norbury (d. between 1500 and 1504). Sir Reginald Bray purchased the wardship of Jane, dau. and heiress of Richard Halywell of Harberton, Esq. (b. 1462 - d. 24 Jul 1506) and Anne Norbury, that she might become the wife of his nephew, as appears by deed dated 12 Feb 1497, made between the said Sir Reginald and Sir John Norbury, her grandfather, in contemplation of "a marriage to be had between Edmund Bray, son of John Bray, brother of the same Sir Reginald, and Jane Halywell, daughter and heir presumptive of Richard Halywell, esq. cousin and heir apparent of Sir John Norbury, (that is to say), daughter of Anne, who was the daughter of the said Sir John Norbury". In consideration of three hundred marks paid by Sir Reginald, Sir John settled immense estates upon his said heir, in the counties of Warwick, Worcester, Surrey, and Hants. In the 6th of Henry VIII. (1515) He was sheriff of the county of Bedford, and was summoned to parliament as Baron Braye, of Eaton-Braye, in that county, on the 3 Nov, 21st of the same monarch. She married Edmund, 1st baron Bray (1484-October 18, 1539) by a settlement dated February 21, 1497 and had by him one son and ten daughters, all of whom are shown with her on the memorial brass in the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Eaton Bray, Bedfordshire. Including:

  • Mary (c.1518-1569),
  • Frances (c.1522-May 27, 1592),
  • Ellen, Dorothy (c.1524-October 31, 1605),
