Part of a 16th century monument to Edmund Bray, 1st Baron Bray (1484-1539), lord of the manor of Eaton, who married Jane Hallighwell (c.1486-1558), the daughter and heiress of Sir Richard Hallighwell, (Halliwell, Halwell, or Holywell) of Harberton and South Pool, Devon (c.1462-July 24, 1506) by his wife Anne Norbury (d. between 1500 and 1504), an heraldic heiress. For heraldry see: D'Elboux, R.H., The Brooke Tomb, Cobham, published in Archaeologia Cantiana, Vol.62, 1949, pp.48-56, esp. pp.50-1[1]
Also sculpted: A Hemp-brake, possibly the canting heraldic badge of the Bray family. The marriage was in 1497, thus the royal arms at right are those of King Henry VII (1485-1509), but possibly of his son King Henry VIII (1509-1547). The plant at right is possibly a pomegranate, possibly a reference to Catherine of Aragon, betrothed firstly to Prince Arthur, then to his younger brother Henry VIII. MarriageText from BURKE'S Extinct and Dormant Peerage, quoted in[2]: Jane Halliighwell (c.1486-October 24,1558) was the daughter of Sir Richard Hallighwell, (Halliwell, Halwell, or Holywell) of Harberton and South Pool, Devon (c.1462-July 24, 1506) and Anne Norbury (d. between 1500 and 1504). Sir Reginald Bray purchased the wardship of Jane, dau. and heiress of Richard Halywell of Harberton, Esq. (b. 1462 - d. 24 Jul 1506) and Anne Norbury, that she might become the wife of his nephew, as appears by deed dated 12 Feb 1497, made between the said Sir Reginald and Sir John Norbury, her grandfather, in contemplation of "a marriage to be had between Edmund Bray, son of John Bray, brother of the same Sir Reginald, and Jane Halywell, daughter and heir presumptive of Richard Halywell, esq. cousin and heir apparent of Sir John Norbury, (that is to say), daughter of Anne, who was the daughter of the said Sir John Norbury". In consideration of three hundred marks paid by Sir Reginald, Sir John settled immense estates upon his said heir, in the counties of Warwick, Worcester, Surrey, and Hants. In the 6th of Henry VIII. (1515) He was sheriff of the county of Bedford, and was summoned to parliament as Baron Braye, of Eaton-Braye, in that county, on the 3 Nov, 21st of the same monarch. She married Edmund, 1st baron Bray (1484-October 18, 1539) by a settlement dated February 21, 1497 and had by him one son and ten daughters, all of whom are shown with her on the memorial brass in the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Eaton Bray, Bedfordshire.
