Summary edit

Description The Raleigh and Gaston/Seaboard Coast Line Building is an historic structure in the government office district of Downtown Raleigh. Built in 1861, the structure originally only had two floors, but a third was added to it by 1891, along with ornate cast iron porches on the front and back. A two-story addition was added to the north (left) side of the building in the early 20th Century, and it was painted white around that time. It remained as a Railroad company office into the 1970s, being listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, and was originally located one block north of the Legislative Building, on the present site of the Halifax Mall. The state bought the building and the land in 1977, and had the building moved in order to make way for a new office building and the Halifax Mall. In the process, the early 20th Century addition was not preserved, and the structure was relocated one block away to its present location on Salisbury Street, where it is surrounded by nondescript late 20th Century state government structures and sticks out like a sore thumb. Today, the building is facing a possible move once again, as the North Carolina Football Club is eyeing the area for a new development that would include a large soccer stadium and a set of new office buildings, which would intrude into the site.
