Description

"Stone Ice Storage," located in an earthen fortress called Banwolseong (半月城 "Half Moon Fortress") in the historic capital of Gyeongju.

Korean royals were known to have storage facilities like these, so that they could have ice even in the hot summers. I don't know the technical details involved in making and storing ice, but these facilities are well known.

Seoul, the capital of Korea since 1392, had two: Seobinggo (西氷庫 "Western Ice Storage") and Dongbinggo (東氷庫 "Eastern Ice Storage"), whose names survive as modern-day district names, and whose locations were close to the Han River for easy obtaining of river ice.
