Summary
editDescriptionSequent S81.jpg |
English: This Sequent S81 machine previously cared for by the now-defunct Dallas Fort Worth Computer User Group's Historical Computer Preservation Society has twenty 80386 processors, a 9-track tape drive, and several Fujitsu Eagle hard drives.
This "low cost supercomputer", or "poor man's Cray", ran a symmetric multiprocessing UNIX-like OS called DYNIX and cost $1,000,000 in 1990. "The Processor cabinet on the right has an air-cooled cage filled with approximately 12x14 inch circuit cards, some of which hold subsets of the twenty non-heatsinked Intel 386 processors. It was possible to restore the machine to operation by removing the card with the broken processor, although there may undoubtedly have been a more elegant 'repair' solution such as 'parking' the CPU. Power was 208/240VAC. It is a wonderful machine with great performance but not economical to operate continuously in a hobby scenario, and its full utilization would be too complex for many computer hobbyists to achieve." -Opcom, DFWCUG HCPS |
