Description

TITLE: Sergeant Henry James Nicholas, VC, MM ARTIST: A. Elizabeth (Abbott) Kelly MEDIUM/SUPPORT: Oils DIMENSIONS: 1230 x 465mm

On 3 December, 1917, New Zealand forces stationed in Belgium advanced on the ruined Polderhoek Chateau on the Western Front. Their objective was to take the Chateau from German soldiers positioned there and disrupt Germany activity on the Polderhoek Spur. The New Zealand troops met heavy resistance, and made little progress. Any gains that were made at the Chateau were lost just days later.

Despite the conditions that day Henry James Nicholas (1891-1918) was awarded the Victoria Cross for "conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty...exceptional valour and coolness". He destroyed an enemy strongpoint that was inflicting heavy casualties and overpowered a sixteen-man enemy garrison, capturing four wounded prisoners and an enemy machine-gun.

Tragically Sergeant Nicholas was killed a few weeks short of the armistice, on 23 October 1918, in a minor skirmish on a bridge on the St. George River near Le Quesnoy. A memorial to Henry James Nicholas was unveiled at the Park of Remembrance, Christchurch, in March 2007.

The above portrait of Nicholas was completed posthumously by Christchurch artist Annie Elizabeth (Abbott) Kelly, CBE (1877-1946). Noted particularly for her portraiture Kelly worked from a photograph of Nicholas for the commissioned Victoria Cross painting.
