English: Sgaraileòd Patterns in the heather are from a history of peat digging in the area for fuel. In the background are smooth rolling hillocks with plenty of exposed rock. These, together with the peat bogs, are typical of the 'cnoc and lochan' landscape that is prevalent on the Outer Hebrides. It has been created by the erosion and scouring of surface deposits by successive icesheets during the series of glacial periods over the last two million years that have made up the current ice age. |
