Description

My spouse's uncle Elstner Hilton took this photo in Japan between 1914 and 1918.

I think this is a workshop where stringed musical instruments are being made. The man on the left is securing the covering over the sound box. The blocks and lengths of rope are required to ensure there is proper and even tension (i.e. tensioners) on the covering when it is attached to the sound box.

In the center, there is a partly completed musical instrument. The cover has been secured to the sound box and the rigging has been removed.

On the far right is an instrument that is having the covering attached to the sound box. The tensioners are all in place, and now it is just a matter of time until the tensioners can be removed.

The only thing I don't know is how the covering was secured to the sound box - was it just glue? Bands of a material such as leather, rope or metal?

    ps: I now have reason to believe that the photos of Japan may be stock photos that Uncle Elstner purchased and pasted into his album. There may be some exceptions: the images of his sister, Miriam, and photos of logging operations in the Phillippines.
