| Description |
English: In 224, Ardashir (Artaxerxes) overthrew Artabanus and established the Sasanid Empire. The Romans invaded Mesopotamia but were contained by Ardashir at Hatra. Probably still underestimating the Sasanians, emperor Gordianus invaded Mesopotamia again (238). The Romans were defeated by Shapur I, who went on to take Osroene and Armenia. Valerian tried to contain Shapur, but was defeated (260) and died in captivity. It was reported that Valerian was humiliated by the Sasanid emperor. |
