editDescriptionSharp-Weatherlow House, Seneca Falls, New York - 20220806.jpg |
English: The Sharp-Weatherlow House, 95 State Street, Seneca Falls, New York, August 2022. A relative scarcity of extant records from that era of Seneca Falls' history precludes the assigning of a specific date to its construction or an identity to its original owner, but what is certain is that of all the period houses on State Street in the Seneca Falls Village Historic District, #95 not only is the most imposing but also retains the integrity of its original design to the greatest degree (in the words of James E. Benjamin of Cornell University's Preservation Planning Workshop, it even "compares with the grand mansions on Cayuga Street"). Resolutely Italianate in style, the house's design boasts square dimensions, a symmetrical façade; a cupola-crowned, shallow-pitched hipped roof, extremely large and ornate brackets arranged in pairs under the eaves of both the house itself and the full-width porch, elegant window heads carved in filigree patterns, and other to-be-expected features. The house appears to have been built sometime in the 1860s, and its earliest identifiable owner was Samuel F. Sharp (1835-1916), who lived there with his younger brother James (1837-1922) and sister-in-law Martha (1839-1924). The Sharp brothers were the sons and employees of English-born druggist Thomas B. Sharp, and Samuel additionally was a director of the Seneca Falls Savings Bank. The sole record of Sharp's ownership of the home comes from a record of its sale in 1886 to Stephen Weatherlow (1835-1929), a notary public and agent of the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York who lived in the house until his death and whose descendants retained ownership of it until 1952. |
