Summary

Description
English: Sheepfold A ruined structure, probably a sheepfold, nestles below this craggy outcrop of dolerite. The dolerite is a coarse-grained, intrusive, igneous rock emplaced as a sill-like body into sandstones of the Cwm Eigiau formation. The relative toughness of the dolerite results in a landscape feature after glaciation and erosion. Together they record a period of quiescence in the volcanic history of the Ordovician Period when the volcanoes of Snowdonia were being eroded vigorously, before a renewed outburst of basaltic lavas and associated minor intrusion into the young sediments. Fortunately, that was 450 million years ago.
