Summary edit

Description
English: Shelf Village Hall, Halifax Road (A6036) Almost hidden from the main road by trees, the Village Hall is on the site of Shelf Old Hall. This had been a timber-framed house, probably of the 15C, and was rebuilt in stone in 1629 by John Phillipe, a woolman from Southowram. It was the manor house of Shelf Hall Manor (which was eventually absorbed by the much larger Shelf Manor). It had a dovecot and a well in the garden below. It was later divided into three cottages, and was given to Queensbury and Shelf UDC by the last owners, Mr and Mrs Lane, in the hope that the site could be used for a village hall. The house was demolished in 1958, but the village hall was not built until 1975, and then through the efforts of Shelf Civic Society rather than the council.
