English: Photograph by Louis Shotridge of his grandfather's (Shotridge's) marble grave statue. It is in the shape of his grandfather's Kaagwaantaan bear crest. Provided by the University of Pennsylvania Museum. Frederica de Laguna also identifies this marble statue as belonging to and commemorating Louis Shotridge's grandfather, Chief Shotridge (Chief Shaadaxhícht in the Tlingit language) of the Chilkat Tlingits of Klukwan, leader of the Kaagwaantaan bear clan, and of the wolf moiety. Additionally, Frederica cites the inscription on the grave monument as reading: "SHOTRIDGE/Died March 1, 1887/Aged 70 years/YEES-YOUT/KOOUL-KEE-TAR/------------?" One of the grave monuments in the background could be Florence Shotridge's grave. |
