Description
English: Slate from the Precambrian of Michigan, USA.

The Siamo Slate is the middle unit of the Precambrian-aged Menominee Group in northern Michigan. The Siamo Slate consists of fine-grained siliciclastics and interbedded fine-grained & coarser-grained siliciclastics that have been subjected to low-grade metamorphism. Geologists have interpreted Siamo rocks as turbidites - underwater sediment slide deposits in a moderately deep, low-energy setting. This sample has preserved horizontal bedding (= layering from left to right) at a high angle to the slaty cleavage (= ~flat surface facing the viewer).

Stratigraphy: Siamo Slate, middle Menominee Group, mid-Marquette Range Supergroup, mid-Paleoproterozoic, 2.1-2.2 Ga (or 1.8-1.9 Ga)

Locality: outcrop along the northern side of County Road 480, just west-northwest of Mud Lake & north of the Kona Hills, southwest of the town of Marquette, Upper Peninsula of Michigan, USA (46° 29.446' North latitude, 87° 29.876' West longitude)
