Description
English: The Sibley-Meads House, 402-04 Jersey Street at Ketchum Place, Buffalo, New York, June 2015. Built in 1875, this stout two-and-a-half-story edifice is an excellent example of the Italianate architecture that was all the rage in the era, scaled up to the dimensions of a double house the construction of which was exceedingly uncommon in the area at the time. The symmetrical brick façade, the segmental-arched windows on the lower floors contrasting with the smaller round-arched ones just below the front gable (all original), and the prominent decorative brackets undergirding the projecting eave of the roof all attest to the aesthetic. The original residents of the house were, respectively, Dr. Lucien G. Sibley (1834-1889), a Civil War veteran-turned-practicing dentist who lived in the left half of the house with his wife Mary (a teacher of bookkeeping and elocution at Central High School) for the first four years of its existence, and Marcus A. G. Meads (1848-1935), a teacher at the nearby Buffalo State Normal School who lived in the right half until his retirement to California around 1916.
