Summary

Description Side lever engine, a form of en:beam engine that was lower and more compact, so more easily installed on ships. In the diagram, the piston connecting rod (b) rises from the piston and connects to the crosshead (D to D) which in turn connects to two side-rods either side of the piston (A to D) which operates the two side-levers (A to B) around fulcrum (C) which supply power to the crankshaft (S).
