English: Side view of a bioluminescent beetle Elateroidea (Lampyridae Ototretinae Stenocladius or Rhagophthalmidae), on a leaf. This specimen measures about 20 mm (0.79 in). The species produces and emits light, via a chemical reaction during which chemical energy is converted into light energy. The principal chemical reaction in bioluminescence involves some light-emitting molecule and an enzyme, generally called the luciferin and the luciferase, respectively. Oxidation of organic compounds induces photon emission. The intensity of this light can be perceived by the human eye in a radius of 2 m (6.6 ft). This image has been created via the focus stacking technique, from 3 long-exposure photographs (0.8 s), using a tripod and a macro lens, in the middle of the night (2 am). To capture the glow emitted, the use of a photographic flash is obviously proscribed and, in conditions of ambient darkness, the adjustment of the manual focus difficult. The camera settings (ISO and depth of field) should be done in accordance to the mobility of the organism, which may lead to motion blurs. At any time, the beetle can also decrease the intensity or even completely stop emitting its light (example here). In this image, the bioluminous radiation is at maximum. A soft and diffuse auxiliary lamp has been brought to reveal the details of the animal. Bioluminescent beetle species are in regression in the World because of the phenomenon of light pollution, insecticides and climate change. This specimen comes from the island of Don Det, Si Phan Don, Laos, in a wild area far from any major city.

Cette espèce produit et émet de la lumière via une réaction chimique au cours de laquelle l'énergie chimique est convertie en énergie lumineuse. Le composé chimique à l'origine de cette bioluminescence est la luciférine. Celle-ci émet de la lumière en s'oxydant grâce à l'intervention de la luciférase, une enzyme. L'oxydation de composés organiques induit une émission de photons. L'intensité de cette lumière peut être perçue par l'oeil humain dans un rayon de 2 m (6.6 ft). Cette image a été réalisée avec la technique du focus stacking à partir de 3 photographies, chacune prise en pose longue (0,8 s), appareil sur trépied avec un objectif macro, en pleine nuit (2 heures du matin). Pour capturer la lueur émise, l'utilisation d'un flash photographique est évidemment proscrite et, dans les conditions d'obscurité ambiante, la mise au point précise du focus manuel particulièrement scabreuse, tout comme celle des réglages photographiques (ISO et profondeur de champ), notamment à cause de la mobilité de l'organisme vivant susceptible d'entraîner des flous cinétiques. A tout moment, l'insecte peut aussi diminuer l'intensité ou même totalement cesser d'émettre sa lumière (exemple ici). Sur cette image, le rayonnement biolumineux est au maximum. Une lampe d'appoint douce et diffuse a été apportée à proximité pour révéler les détails de l'animal. Les espèces bioluminescentes de coléoptères sont en voie de régression dans le Monde à cause du phénomène de pollution lumineuse, des insecticides et du dérèglement climatique. Ce specimen habite l'île de Don Det, Si Phan Don au Laos, dans une région sauvage loin de toute grande ville. |
