Basic mechanical structure of a siderostat.

Summary edit

Description
English: Basic Siderostat mechanical design. The mount is grey, the two mirrors are green, the motorized altitude and azimuth axes are red, and the light beam is blue. The vertical azimuth axis attached to the base plate rotates the entire structure. The horizontal altitude axis is is attached to the mount such that M1 rotates around M2 on a circle when the azimuth axis rotates. The star light first hits Mirror M1, is reflected by 90 degrees to M2, which reflects it again by 90 degrees parallel to the azimuth axis. M2 is centered on the azimuth axis such that the beam has a stable direction for any mix of rotation angles of the two axes. The field of view is limited by the width of the base plate as seen from M1.
