English: Sign on the Crown Hotel This sign of Sir Winston Churchill is on the Crown Hotel on West Street.
Winston Leonard Spencer (1874-1965), elder son of Lord Randolph Churchill. After training at Sandhurst he served in India (1897) and the Sudan (1898) he was a war correspondent in south Africa during the second Boer War (1899-1902) where he was briefly captured. He was elected a Conservative MP in 1901 but, was committed to free trade so joined the Liberals in 1904. He was successively president of the Board of Trade (1908-10), home secretary (1910-11), and first lord of the Admiralty (1911-15). Criticized for the failure of the naval expedition to the Dardanelles (1915), he was demoted and resigned shortly afterwards. He was appointed minister of munitions in 1917 and encouraged the development of the tank. He was out of parliament from 1922 to 1924. He was re-elected to parliament in 1925 and became Chancellor of the exchequer under Baldwin but failed to deal effectively with deflation and unemployment. The government fell in 1929 and Churchill did not again hold office until the outbreak of World War II. Churchill became prime minister in 1940 and it was then that he came into his own, displaying outstanding ability as a leader and an an inspirational orator. Churchill, also a writer, published several histories and biographies. |
