Description
English: A U.S. Navy Sikorsky HSS-1 Seabat of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 7 (HS-7) "Big Dippers" in flight. The photo was taken between 1957 and 1960 when HS-7 operated with the tail code "HD". In June 1960, HS-6 was assigned to Carrier Anti-Submarine Air Group 58 (CVSG-58) and received the new tail code "AW".
Original caption: "330-PSA-236-61 (USN 1037212): HSS-1 Helicopter, now called Seabat, is used in anti-submarine warfare. Shown here in flight, it is capable of day or night flight under intolerant flight conditions. Master caption: Four operational Navy helicopters have been assigned popular names by the Chief of the Bureau of Naval Weapons. The HUS-1 has been assigned the name: Seahorse; the HSS-1 will be known as Seabat; the HSS-2 will be called Seadragon; and the HRB-1 will be Sea Knight. Photograph released October 25, 1961."
