Description
English: In the early 1930s, Sikorsky built 23 of these amphibians for the sportsman or executive pilot. The New England Air Museum's S-39, having been owned by a number of organizations and individuals, made history during WW-II when it was used for air-sea rescue missions by the Civil Air Patrol. One such mission resulted in the pilot, Hugh Sharp, and his observer, Ed Edwards, becoming the first civilians ever to be awarded the Air Medal. It also earned the Sikorsky Company the prestigious Collier Trophy.
