Summary
editDescriptionSilchester Church - geograph.org.uk - 943712.jpg |
English: Silchester Church St Mary's church has the distinction of being the only non-Roman building ever to have occupied the area within the walls of Calleva Atrebatum, Roman Silchester. Unlike most Roman settlements, Silchester was abandoned forever when the Romans left in about the 5th century, which makes the site of particular value to archaeologists. However, for some reason the church was built here in about 1180 - 1200 some way from modern Silchester. |
