Description
English: Silhouettes in Ridley Wood, New Forest. Ridley Wood contains many old beech pollards, such as the one seen in silhouette on the left here. It is recorded that in 1571 the tenant of Ridley copice "shrouded" (pollarded) two hundred trees in the wood, although this does not mean that this particular specimen is that old. Pollarding was outlawed in 1698, so the tree probably dates from the 17th century. In summer the leafy canopy excludes a lot of light and so the wood is dark and shady. Beyond the young trees on the edge of the wood is the open heath of Ridley Green.
