Description

This quarry near Toledo, Ohio targeted limestone for cement-making purposes. The gray shale-rich material at center-left is an overburden unit of Middle Devonian age called the Silica Formation (also known as the Silica Shale). The Silica Formation is richly fossiliferous with typical mid-Paleozoic marine invertebrates such as brachiopods, bryozoans, corals, crinoids, and trilobites. The limestone-rich unit below it (see the quarry highwall in the distance) is the Dundee Limestone (Middle Devonian). The Anderson Limestone is supposedly present below the Dundee in this quarry (I did not have this quarry's precise stratigraphy unambiguously pointed out to me).
