English: Looking north at memorial to Sir John Dill, located in Section 32 of Arlington National Cemetery in Arlingto, Virginia, in the United States.
Dill was Chief of the British Joint Staff Mission and then Senior British Representative on the Combined Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C., during World War II from 1941 to 1944. He died of leukemia in November 1944. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery after President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave permission for his interment there. The U.S. Congress passed a joint resolution on December 20, 1944, authorizing a memorial to be erected in his honor. A group of high-ranking officers and civilians with whom he worked formed a committee to erect the memorial. American sculptor Herbert Haseltine designed the memorial and sculpted the statue. It was dedicated by President Harry S. Truman on November 1, 1950. |
