DescriptionSisters in stone - geograph.org.uk - 280642.jpg |
English: Sisters in stone. A pair of beautiful gravestones catch the autumnal sun in the churchyard of St Mary's, Upton Grey. The stone on the left reads: " In memory of HESTER STRIDE, DAUGHTER OF PHILIP & ANN STRIDE, who died Dec 27 1847 Aged 60 Years". Its companion reads: "In memory of REBECCA YALDEN, DAUGHTER OF PHILIP & ANN STRIDE, who died Jun 25 1837 Aged 47 Years". The elder sister presumably died a spinster. Both surnames (Stride and Yalden) occur in or near the village in the 21st century. The gravestones, which are almost impossible to read unless the sun strikes at the right angle, greet churchgoers just after they leave the porch 282053. |
