English: Site of the former St Peter's parish church, Eltham, London SE12, seen from the northwest at the junction of Courtlands Avenue (right) and Lyme Farm Road (foreground and right). The church was built in 1870–71 but damaged by enemy action in 1941 and closed. It was used for storage, and was declared redundant in 1960.
In 1961 Wates bought the site for £5,000, demolished the remains of the church and built two blocks of flats on the site. They are the block in the centre of this view (103–113 Courtlands Avenue) and that on the left (32–50 Lyme Farm Road). The parish war memorial (centre right) has been preserved and left in situ. In 1960 a new St Peter's parish church was built on Eltham Road in Lee. This was itself replaced by a third church built in 1983: see 1183103. |
