Title |
English: Skull & crossbones, and a young mother, in Colonial America |
||||
Description |
English: Reddish brown gravestone, with inscription, and silver leaded crown, in a cemetery, with other gravestones, as well as grass and trees, also visible. Sandstone marker for Elizabeth Wright, who died in 1766, at age 34. The stone features the most durable skull and crossbones on a St. Paul's gravestone. These symbols served as a reminder of a person's mortality, especially when death could be sudden and unexpected in early America. Don't not wait too long to improve your personal, religious or community behavior. Thomas Brown, a master New York City craftsman, is the likely carver of this marker. Elizabeth's identification as the wife of Doctor Thomas Wright also suggests something about the legal status of women in colonial America.
