editStaklo za paljenje Samuela Parkera. Bakrorez anonimnog umjetnika iz 1840. Prema riječima Parkerova prijatelja, velečasnog J. Jovcea (Scientific Dia-logues, London, 1844., str. 249.-250.), to staklo za paljenje, koje je konstruirao "gospodin Parker iz Fleet Streeta", imalo je doista veliku leću: "Promjer joj je bio 91,5 cm, a kada se pričvrstila za okvir, otkrivala je čistu površinu promjera 68,62 cm. Žarište joj je, pomoću druge leće, reducirano na promjer od 1,27 cm. Toplina dobivena na taj način bila je toliko intenzivna da su se željezne ploče mogle rastopiti za samo nekoliko sekundi: - crijepovi i ploče od škriljevca odmah bi se užarili i postaklili: - sumpor, katran i druge smolaste tvari topile bi se pod vodom: - pepeo drveta, kao i uopće pepeo biljnoga podrijetla, odmah bi se pretvorio u prozirno staklo ... čak bi i zlato, za samo nekoliko sekundi, poprimalo tekući oblik; međutim, unatoč intenzivnoj toplini u žarištu, u konus zraka, udaljen samo 2,5 cm od žarišta, mogao se staviti prst, bez ikakvih posljedica ili ozljeda ... Gospodin Parker želio je doznati što bi se dogodilo stavi li prst u žarište. Osjećaj je sličan, opisao je, onome kada nas opeče plamen svijeće ... komadić drveta pretvara se u ugljen kada se nalazi u posudi s vodom ... Probušimo li komad drvenog ugljena i stavimo li u tu šupljinu neku tvar koju želimo zapaliti, učinak leće bit će još bolji. Na taj se način može veoma brzo rastopiti bilo koji metal, te će planuti vatra kao da je raspiruje kovačev mijeh." Taje izvanredna naprava do 1840. postala dijelom zbirke kineskoga cara, te se i danas čuva u pekinškom Zabranjenom gradu, zajedno sa skupocjenim satovima i svakojakim mehaničkim napravama.
