Summary edit

Description

This is an outcrop of Upper Mississippian Slade Formation in Kentucky. The unit was formerly known as the Newman Limestone ("They always change the names to protect the innocent!"). Slade Formation limestones are shallow ocean deposits. At this site, the Slade Formation has been divided into the following members:

Maddox Branch Member (top) Ramey Creek Member Tygarts Creek Member Armstrong Hill Member Cave Branch Member Mill Knob Member Warix Run Member (base)

Pennsylvanian-aged Breathitt Formation disconformably overlies the Slade here.

The cliff-forming unit at the top is the Tygarts Creek Member, with limestones and some dolostones. The gray and dark red slopes below that are mudstones of the Cave Branch Member. The gray, ledge-forming, undulating horizon is the Warix Run Member, which mostly consists of sandy limestones. The slope below that is the Mill Knob Member. The Warix Run also occurs below the lower slope - the Warix Run and Mill Knob lithofacies are complexly interfingering in this area.
