Description
English: The unique quatrefoil-shaped Slaughden Martello Tower, Suffolk, 7 October 2006. The village of Slaughden was washed away by a North Sea storm in 1936. The Slaughden tower is the largest of 103 Martello Towers built in 1808-12 on the south east coast of England as a defence against a threatened French invasion by Napoleon. The towers were inspired by defensive towers built in Corsica since the 15th Century and in particular the Genoese-built Torri di Mortella which two Royal Navy warships bombarded unsucessfully for two days at the cost of much damage to themselves, the tower evetually falling to British land forces. Note the difference in the English spelling and the Corsican spelling, the result of the characteristic English habit of getting foreign names wrong.
