English: In communist town an area was known as “Korzo” – a block or two of cafes and milk bars (a communist Fast Food place). These government restaurants provided cheap and fast meals for working people. Korzo provided the a place for friends to meet up. In Bratislava, Korzo extended from Michael’s gate down to Old Town Square. The Korzo rock memorializes the midpoint.
Milk bars, were government-subsidized cafeterias from the Communist days. They were no-frills eateries created to provide affordable, hearty meals for labourers. Vegetarian, milk and other dairy-based meals were served because there was a surplus of these products and a scarcity of meat. Hence, the name "milk bar." |
