English: Do you smell that? It smells like the first annual #InternationalManedWolfDay! These striking South American canines are sometimes described as a “fox on stilts.” However, genetic studies show that they are neither a wolf nor a fox, but a unique species that belongs in its own genus. At the Zoo, you will likely smell the maned wolves before you see them. They mark their territory using their own pungent scent glands and latrines. They also roll around in other strong scents, which is a behavior thought to cover their own odor to hide from prey or other predators. “Maned wolves love all things stinky,“ says Animal Keeper Monica Richards. Our maned wolf pair enjoys novel fragrance enrichment like cologne, musk, or other animals urine. The stinkier, the better!
