English: Autumn fires continued to scorch the southeastern United States through late November 2016 during an abnormally intense wildfire season. Higher than normal temperatures, low humidity, a deepening drought, and strong winds have combined to turn much of the forests and grasslands virtual tinderboxes. Fires ignite and spread quickly while firefighters struggle to get ahead and contain the flames.
According to USA Today wildfires had burned more than 119,000 acres in 8 states as of November 20, including Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. Increased visits to the emergency room for smoke-related illnesses such as asthma and bronchitis have been reported in several locations including Chattanooga, Tennessee and Dalton, Gainesville, Jasper and Atlanta, Georgia during November. Smoke from wildfires contain small particles that can irritate the eyes and respiratory system and is particularly problematic for people with chronic illnesses. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite flew over the southeastern United States on November 11 and acquired a true-color image of the smoky scene. Clouds cover much of South Carolina and Georgia, while a long river of gray smoke spills over the coast and blows several hundreds of miles across the Atlantic Ocean. |
