English: A huge gray river of smoke swirled over north central Russia in early July 2016, marking a heavy fire season across the region. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA's Aqua satellite captured this true-color image on July 8.

Several large red hotspots can be seen scattered along the southern section of the image. Such hotspots are areas where the thermal sensors on the MODIS instrument detected temperatures higher than background. When combined with smoke, such hotspots are diagnostic for actively burning fires.

Smoke covers a massive area, appearing to be entrained with clouds in some areas. Smoke covers the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug in north-central Russia, as well as the Kara Sea (northwest) and the long, branched Gulf of Ob. Northern Russia's 2015-2016 winter was both warm and dry, making conditions ripe for wildfires to spread quickly, once ignited.
