Summary edit

Description
English: Smotherfly Wide - a new canal? This area was the site of Smotherfly surface mine, and this channel was made as a diversion for the River Erewash (which runs to the east). The original plan for the site was for the channel to be filled in, but the Friends of the Cromford Canal http://www.cromfordcanal.org.uk want to keep it as part of the Pinxton Arm of a restored canal, the original canal line having been obliterated by the mining. Planning consent was granted in February 2008 and (subject to funding issues) work will begin in 2009. Categorised (for the moment) as "river bed".
