Summary edit

Description
English: A domestic patio made of 600 mm square paving slabs adjoining a lawn the day after a snowfall. The residual heat in the earth is conducted through the paving slabs much better than through the lawn or the material between the paving slabs. In addition, the paving stones have a higher heat storage capacity than the paving slabs and the grass. This causing different energy input into the snow and thus to different melting, thereby showing up the outline of the paving slabs.

At the time that the photograph was taken, the temperature recorded at an airfield less than 10 km away was 0°C; during the preceding 36 hours the highest temperature was also 0°C (midday the previous day) and the lowest temperature was -3°C.
