DescriptionSnowflakes under microscope PHYSIQUE populaire E Desbeaux fig 455 Page 603.jpg |
English: These snowflakes are aggregates of snow crystals that all have hexagonal symmetry – the signature of the frozen water molecule. The growth of crystals takes place from a microscopic seed and lasts several hours during which the formation conditions vary. The complex shapes are due to temperature, water vapor concentration and local electric fields. It can be demonstrated that no two snowflakes are perfectly identical.
Emile Desbeaux (1845 - 1903 Paris) was a playwright and scientific popularizer for young people.
