Description
English: Presumed portrait of Ernest Augustus I, Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (1688-1748), misidentified with her son Ernest Augustus II, Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (1737-1758).
  • Identification proposed by user Ecummenic (talk) based on the comparison with some portraits of Ernest Augustus I (see images below), and the lack of physical resemblance of the sitter of this portrait to verified representations of Ernest Augustus II.
According to the old legend on verso of the male portrait, we are dealing with miniature portraits of Duke Ersnt August II of Saxe-Weimar (1737-1758; see Wikipedia) and his wife Anna Amalia, nee Princess of Brunnswyck (1739-1807; see Wikipedia). Presumably, both miniatures were painted in the late 1750s by the sitters' court artist."
