Português: Os snrs. Barões da Conceição dão hoje uma soireé Fortunato Joaquim Figueira, barão da Conceição (1809-1885) e baronesa Elizabeth Lehmann Lanstroth (1822-1904) Fortunato Joaquim Figueira (25 out. 1809; 9 abr. 1885) e o irmão, Paulo Fortunato Figueira, eram filhos do capitão Paulo Joaquim Figueira e haviam participado na malograda defesa da Madeira frente às forças miguelistas, em 1828. Perante o desastre ocorrido, fizeram-se ao mar numa pequena embarcação, vindo a ser recolhidos por um navio de carreira que os levou para África. Passaram então ao Brasil e, daí, aos Estados Unidos da América, estabelecendo-se em Nova Iorque com negócios na área da importação de vinhos. Vieram a adquirir importantes meios de fortuna, essencialmente, em princípio, recorrendo à falsificação de papel moeda brasileiro, como foram noticiando os periódicos de Nova Iorque e do Rio de Janeiro. Fortunato Joaquim Figueira, entretanto, saiu de Nova Iorque e casou em Filadélfia, nos Estados Unidos, em 30 de outubro de 1847, com Elizabeth Lehmann Lanstroth (1822-1904). Fixando-se em Lisboa, conseguiu alvará de moço fidalgo com exercício na Casa Real e de comendador da Ordem de Cristo, de 13 de outubro de 1850, dado seu envolvimento na defesa da Madeira constitucional e, por decreto de 11 set. 1855, o título de barão da Conceição. Veio a radicar-se por 1868 na Madeira, tendo levantado a Quinta da Estrela, no Caniço, que dotou com um bom parque arbóreo, hoje Quinta Esplêndida, falecendo no Funchal, na Quinta Faria, na Rua dos Ilhéus, a 9 abr. 1885. |
