Many cases are recorded inwhich recovery has followed the removal of thelocal disease by an operation not opening thedura, even though symptoms of meningitis werealready present. The following is an instance of such acase:— In April 1901 I saw with Mr. Tyrrell a boy,aged nine years, who had just returned fromParis. There was a clear history of tubercle in hisfamily. Three years previously tubercular glands hadbeen removed from both sides of his neck. Aslight watery discharge from the right ear hadbeen noticed a year before the operation onthe neck, and had continued without inter-mission. Six weeks before I saw the patient he hadcomplained of pain in the head on running.During the two preceding weeks he had hadsevere pain in the head at intervals, with vomit-ing.
