English: Somerleyton Hall - sculpture by John Thomas. The 12 acre gardens and grounds at Somerleyton Hall > 1506720 are planted with many magnificent specimen trees, shrubs and borders > 1506687. There is a walled garden with ornate iron and glass greenhouses > 1506780 designed by Joseph Paxton, the architect of Crystal Palace. Ancient wisteria are growing in a pergola > 1506793 and the yew hedge maze, described one of the finest in Britain, was designed and planted in 1846 by William Nesfield. The gardens were laid out at the same time as the Hall was re-built (1844-51) by Sir Morton Peto and they retain much of their original Victorian appearance. The gardens are home to a notable collection of garden sculptures > 1506787 by John Thomas, who also worked on the Houses of Parliament. |
