| Description |
English: The Japanese Garden at Sonnenberg Gardens State Historic Park, as seen in August 2020. Formerly an apple orchard, the Japanese Garden was the brainchild of the lady of the house, Mary Clark Thompson, who had seen such a garden on a 1903 trip to Kyoto. Three years later, she hired Japanese-born landscape designer Kikujiro Wadamori to replicate it for her in a style that evoked the landscape of Japan with its hills, lakes and islands. Wadamori and his team of workers completed the garden in only six months. They returned in April 1908 to build the teahouse, one of only about a hundred such buildings in the U.S. today. |
